My
handcrafted, fun and colorful finials
sit solidly glued atop pairs of high
quality,
commercially-manufactured bamboo knitting needles.
Turned to match, they still are one-of-a-kind as
each is turned separately, and freehand, on my lathe.

*Many
customers have asked me to make full-length needles in this colorful laminated
birch. While I can accomplish the task, I really, really dislike the job!
Considering all my turning is done freehand, and knitting needles come in pairs
(or more!) that need to be a
uniform diameter, it can be a nightmare! If my skew dips a bit and cuts a little
deeper than 10mm, for example, I have to go back and turn the entire length to
that smaller diameter. Cut and measure, cut and measure, cut and measure... And
once I get the first needle successfully turned, I have to do the whole process
again for its mate! (Maybe returning to the first needle to reduce its size
again and again and again!) AAaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrgh!
Were I a big production
company, I might invest in one of those dowel cutting machines where I could
just push a button, sip my tea, and wait. But I'm not. I also can't live on
third world wages, so to save you (and me) the frustration of paying
outrageously (in dollars OR time) I pass on the job to the big boys. (You can
purchase such factory-made needles elsewhere online.)
Also, be aware that bamboo
needles are a natural material that can warp a bit due to atmospheric conditions
like humidity -- not unlike the way plastic needles bend to use. The difference
is that bamboo IS a natural material and feels way better to hold (and use) than
plastic, no matter what.

For me,
the greatest joy of woodturning happens when the shape emerges from a block of wood,
as if by its own design, capturing the moment
when art meets craft. |
